Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice

Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice
Jalan Batu Ambar, Taman Kok Lian
51200 Kuala Lumpur
(Coordinates: 3° 12' 9.75", 101° 40' 24.50")

In the days when I was recovering from hypothyroidism (and couldn’t drive) I used to come here almost every weekend since it’s a convenience RapidKL bus to go and to come back from our apartment.

There is a funny story behind how we came to discover this place. A few years ago, we read online about a Korean restaurant in Kepong and thought we’d give it a go. Lo and behold when we got to the address it was closed down, and from the looks of things it’s been closed for quite a while. This incident taught us to call ahead to verify its existence before trying out a new place.

On the way back from Kepong, we stopped by a row of stalls along Jalan Ipoh right at the Jalan Kepong/Jalan Ipoh roundabout. We were fascinated by the rows of pots being cooked with charcoal, and have been coming here ever since.

This stall’s signature (and only) dish is the Claypot Chicken Rice, hence the name Jalan Ipoh Claypot Chicken Rice (simple, apt and appropriate if you ask me). We don’t know if it’s just us but we find this particular version of the Claypot Chicken Rice to be particularly flavourful because of the charcoal fire, and is just about the best we’ve had anywhere.

all yours boy!

bon appetit

and I'm digging in!

(Beware: From time to time the proprietor will get cranky with the way his wife supposedly screws up the orders, and this is where the fun starts because his Cantonese  gets very 'colourful'.)

And the best part? The large (portions for two persons) and small (portion for one person) pots plus three glasses of herbal tea cost us only… wait for it… (drum roll please)... RM22!  Does this stall epitomize ‘the everyday food for the everyday person’? Heck yeah, and in fact this stall is the very definition.
