As is always the case, driven by this new-found need
to observe a low-carb diet we had actually meant to have dinner at Subway (the nearest outlet was a 5-minute walk away, locating at CIMB’s huge and
gleaming new headquarters known as Menara Bumiputra along Jalan Raja Laut). It’s
the busiest time of the week with weekend revellers flocking the Jalan Tuanku
Abdul Rahman shopping district, but guess what? This particular branch of
Subway chooses to close its doors at 7:00PM during the weekends, go figure!
It then began to pour (evening showers are getting to be the norm these days) so in search of shelter we made our way across to Sogo. After much deliberation we decided to have our dinner instead and settled on this quaint little café. Apparently this café was formerly known as Hoo Koon Kopitiam (or so says the signboard) but we failed to find any background of its origin online. A little history of how Hoo Koon turned to Kafe Kampung would be nice, oh well.
Cat had the
packed 1Fried Mee Hoon and some cakes, while I sheepishly ordered
the 2Nasi Lemak (I know, I know… what became of the low-carb diet,
right?); Brendan (who was never enamoured with the dishes offered here) went
over a few doors down to get his McDonald’s Fried Chicken set.
2fried rice vermicelli
2fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and
screwpine leaves
The verdict?
We’ve been coming off and on for a great many years now, but mostly when we’re
in search of comfort food. In fact this place requires a special shout out
where its curry puff is concerned, which is among the best (albeit a bit
pricey) in the Klang Valley. And the damage? Cat and I spent RM9.20 on
ourselves while Brendan paid RM10.00 for his McDonald’s set meal, not bad
considering we had initially only intended to get out of the pouring rain.
