We were in the neighbourhood (Cat’s here for her
monthly hair treatment) and thought we’d give this place a try. It has received
glowing reviews online and since it’s just a few blocks away from Pudu Plaza
(where we usually park our car, parking here can be a b*tch!) it is
conveniently located. Plus, what with me having to observe a low-carb diet 1Yong
Tau Foo seemed to fit the bill.
1Clear consommé soup containing a varied
selection of food items including fish balls, crab sticks, bitter gourds,
cuttlefish, lettuce, ladies fingers, as well as chilies, and various forms of
fresh produce, seafood and meats common in Chinese cuisine. Some of these
items, such as bitter gourd and chili, are usually filled with fish paste
(surimi). The foods are then sliced into bite-size pieces, cooked briefly in
boiling broth or deep-fried and then served either in the broth as soup or with
the broth in a separate bowl. Essential accompaniments are a spicy, vinegary
chili sauce and a distinctive brown sweet bean sauce or hoisin sauce for
dipping.

The place
seems old and established, and you have an option of either dining out in the
fresh air or indoors where there’s air-conditioning. We made our selection of
the various dishes (as per photographs below), and the stiflingly hot afternoon
drove us indoors. We were early but still, the crowds were already swelling for
lunch.

The verdict?
We were very pleasantly surprised by the tastiness. If anything, the Yong Tau
Foo here is comparable (if not better) than the more traditionally well-known establishments
in Ampang. Looks like we’ll have no need to go to Ampang for our Yong Tau Foo
fix anymore, since Yap Hup Kee is an excellent alternative. And the damage? Including
a round of chrysanthemum tea it came up to a respectable RM37.90, well within
the confines of the everyday food for the everyday person.
