Restoran Wan Hai

Jalan Kampung Tiong Wisma

For the second day running we turned away from Medan Selera Kampung Tiong in disappointment due to the lack of parking (and we suspect seating as well) there.

Kuala Terengganu folks of my generation will remember Restoran Wan Hai as the anchor tenant on the ground floor of Hock Kee Seng department store, in the days when the store occupied the upper floors of its building. In those days Wan Hai was THE kopitiam in town, and almost everyone who’s anyone had their meals there.

After Hock Kee Seng decided to occupy the ground floor as well and Wan Hai was evicted, I couldn’t remember what happened to them after that. It was actually fairly recently that we rediscovered Wan Hai, but it had lost all its former glory and is now reduced to a small single shop lot premise.

We were looking for something simple anyway this morning and opted for the perennial Roti Bakar with Kaya (toasted bread with coconut jam); I had a cup of black coffee in the traditional ceramic cup while Cat and Brendan had their customary Iced Milo.

At RM8 for the whole shebang we didn’t have much for complaints and this restaurant was just a convenient pit stop before we start our morning gallivant at Pasar Kedai Payang.
