Warung Cili Padi

This restaurant was one of our favourite hangouts back in the days when we lived in Kuala Terengganu, due in part to the fact that it was a stone’s throw away from where we used to live.

fusion kitchen?

It’s proprietress, Kak Lah was a very good friend of ours and when Cat just gave birth to Brendan, was kind enough to help us source for a traditional masseuse to aid in Cat’s speedy recovery. On this occasion however, Kak Lah was not in and we were not able to say hi, she would have been tickled pink to see how Brendan has grown seeing that the last time we met Brendan was barely three years old.

... and a third helping!

Tonight is our last night here in Kuala Terengganu and as a farewell gift to ourselves we had Keropok Lekor (fish sausages?) to our hearts content. I ordered the 1Mee Goreng Mamak as well; Brendan had the 2Nasi Goreng Pattaya while Cat opted for the 3Nasi Goreng Ikan Masin.

1yellow egg noodles stir-fried Mamak (local Indian Muslim cuisine) style
2fried rice wrapped in an omelette, similar to Omurice, a contemporary Japanese cuisine consisting of an omelette made with fried rice and usually topped with ketchup
3stir-fried pre-cooked rice with salted dried fish

The verdict? You can never go wrong with Keropok Lekor, as far as we are concerned. Brendan thoroughly enjoyed his Nasi Goreng Pattaya while Cat simply loved her aromatic Nasi Goreng Ikan Masin. I too took great pleasure in devouring my Mee Goreng Mamak (though it proved VERY spicy) intertwined with the Keropok Lekor. And the damage? Along with a round of various freshly squeezed fruit juices and a very generous plate of Keropok Lekor it cost us only RM24.50, so to say that Warung Cili Padi gives you bang for your bucks would be a gross understatement, eh?

Warung Cili Padi offers a great marriage of the typical mainstream west coast cuisine and traditional east coast flavours. Give this place a try if you’re looking for some east-west fusion, highly recommended!
