Happy New Year!

And just how do we as a family ring in the New Year? No prizes for guessing that we celebrate the beginning of the new year by going to an eating place, and it being our first post of the year and all. A good friend recommended this place to us and suggested that we give the house specialty a try.

it used to be a Yong Tau Foo restaurant

recommended by a good friend

it was a slow lazy afternoon

We duly obliged and apart from the 1Paper Wrapped Chicken, and it being the New Year and all we (went overboard) and ordered the 2Tung Po Braised Pork Belly as well as Salted Vegetable and Bean Curd Soup. You will not imagine the kilometres I will have to run to to 'absolve' myself of such a ‘sinful’ spread, diet-wise.

1morsels of marinated chicken wrapped in parchment paper envelopes
2a classic pork dish from mainland China, cooked using pork belly and a combination of ginger, garlic, aromatic spices, chilli peppers, sugar, light and dark soy, and rice wine. The pork belly is cooked until the fat and skin are gelatinous and melt easily in the mouth, while the sauce is usually thick, sweet and fairly sticky

the house specialty

paper wrapped chicken, what we initially came here for

pretty decent

ooh, a sinful dish

succulent tung po braised pork belly

the undisputed star of the meal

our usual soup

salted vegetable and bean curd soup to wash it all down

our beverages

he was curious as first

but eventually neglected the wrapped chicken altogether

Happy New Year everyone!

The verdict? This may come as a surprise but we honestly thought the Braised Pork Belly outshone the Wrapped Chicken, hands down. Brendan (who’s an avid lover of all things bacon) absolutely loved the Braised Pork Belly (which is in hindsight, uncured bacon after all) and could not get enough of it, so much so that he completely neglected the Wrapped Chicken. There was actually nothing wrong with the Wrapped Chicken, it’s just that it was completely overshadowed by the Braised Pork Belly, that’s all.

And since it was a celebratory lunch to usher in the New Year we’ll not discuss damage, which means the total breached the realms of the everyday food for the everyday person.
