Nasi Padang Istemewa

(within Restoran Ramai)
Jalan Banggol
20100 Kuala Terengganu
Coordinates: 5.331528, 103.135361

I strongly cling to the belief that when my mother had me in her womb she constantly had the kempunan (craving) for Buyong’s 1Nasi Padang. That’s the only explanation I have for why I cannot resist its dishes no matter how hard I try. Then my mother had to burst my bubble; she gently explained that when she was pregnant with me Nasi Padang Istemewa did not yet exist. Sheesh!

1padang-style rice, a miniature banquet of meats, fish, vegetables, and spicy sambal (fiery-spicy condiment) eaten with plain white rice

we lived barely half a kilometer away all those years ago

sure does bring back memories

Entering the shop the aroma hits you smack in the face, and in the gut as well. Salivating was a natural bodily function that I fought hard to keep in check.

first thing you see as you enter

rich gravy and pickles

check these dishes out...

very very carefully...
and tell me you're not salivating?

Our dear friend Buyong was not in on this particular day. We sent our warmest regards to his assistant, and began our selection. Brendan had his rice with fried chicken; while Cat and I (as we always do whenever we're in Kuala Terengganu) had the fried fish. To top it off Cat added the squid with some fried bean sprouts for good measure, while I added a fried tofu.

what Brendan had

what Cat had

what I had

We are never disappointed whenever we come here; the only thing that we've noticed that the price here has increased since the last time we were here (last year). Sign of the times, we guess?
