Bakar Station

Sunway Putra Mall
100, Jalan Putra
Chow Kit
50350 Kuala Lumpur
Coordinates: 3.166387, 101.692571

I first came to Kuala Lumpur as a teenager in 1987 and at about the same time a shopping complex, known as "The Mall" which was opened.  At the time, The Mall was the largest shopping centre in Malaysia and housed Malaysia's first Yaohan store which operated from the mall's opening in 1987 until 1997 before its bankruptcy in Japan.

This mall brings back memories since it is situated across the street from the Putra World Trade Centre and the Seri Pacific Hotel, as well as the Hentian Duta bus terminal that housed all expresses heading to the East Coast (including my hometown of Kuala Terengganu). Anyone travelling to or from the East Coast would have at one time or another been to The Mall.

In March 2011, The Mall (among other things) was acquired by Sunway in a public auction and soon embarked on a refurbishment exercise in May 2013. After two long years (during which time all its tenants had to move out) it was reopened as "Sunway Putra Mall" in May 2015.

A few months later we came here to check out its hawker centre at the top floor and see what was on offer.

literally "Appetite" Street

quaint and quiet alleyways

resembling pre-war shop houses in the straits settlements

things have changed for sure

an actual barbershop?

equally enticing

We settled on an Ikan Bakar (grilled fish) stall appropriately called Bakar Station that had several ‘Super Value’ meals on offer, and proceeded to order.

clean and cosy

in case we were still hungry

I had the grilled Stingray with rice while Cat and Brendan had the 1Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang.

1a Malay fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf, served with chicken stew s rich in spices, using coconut milk and a paste of mixed ground spices, including ginger, galangal, turmeric leaves, lemongrass, garlic, shallots, chilies, and other spices.

both Brendan and Cat

had the nasi lemak ayam rendang

came with the super value set

The verdict? I enjoyed the grilled stingray while Brendan and Cat both had no complaints about their Nasi Lemak. All in all since both dishes were on offer as a ‘Super Value’ meal Bakar Station definitely qualifies for the category of the everyday food for the everyday man.
