Food-Fuelled WALKABOUT: Ootori Confectionery • Huang Du Food Court

Hunger pangs!

We picked you up again after returning from Muar. The Mee Bandung at Abu Bakar Hanipah lulled us into a false sense of fullness, thinking that it would tide us over till dinnertime.

Alas we were hungry again by three in the afternoon. We braved the blazing sun in search of sustenance, for in the words of Dr. David Banner: " Please don't keep me hangry. You wouldn't like me when I'm hangry." With nothing in mind we thought we’d explore the area and see what it had to offer.

On the way out we went over to where BiBi was parked in search of my fishing hat. Sure enough the hat sat in a pile right under the watchful eye of our beloved BiBi. We then headed out onto Jalan Bendehara, walking across onto Jalan Bunga Raya Pantai.

We hoped for light refreshments at an oddly named cafe called Sharing Plates, but the queue dissuaded us. We doubled back and bought Eu Char Koay (Chinese Crullers) and Ham Chin Peng (Chinese Fried Doughnut) from our usual stall in front of Mei Sin Cafe.

We then strolled into Ootori Confectionary to have light refreshments that consisted of:

  • 2 Apple Pies
  • 2 Sardine Puffs
  • 2 original Cendul

that came to RM36.00 (approximately USD/EUR8).

Since the sun was bearing down on us we retreated to the comfort of the homestay.

We emerged again at half past seven and took a walk along Jalan Bendahara headed south before turning left then walking across Jalan Munshi Abdullah to an old favourite haunt of ours, Huang Du food court.

Once a vibrant and bustling place the pandemic wreaked havoc on its ability to do business and the last time we were here it was all but closed. To our pleasant surprise Huang Du has since bounced back, with all its stalls tenanted, and hardly an empty table in sight.

We were unimaginative and ordered almost the same dishes as the night before:

  • White Radish Soup with Rice
  • ABC Soup with Rice
  • a plate of Ngo Hiong (Lor Bak?)
  • 2 Iced Barley

also for a grand total of RM36.00  (approximately USD8/EUR7). I then took a walk around Huang Du to showcase the food stalls here. We then we exited and came across a procession of worshippers celebrating a Spirit Medium Festival, where those who believe in the ability to interact with deities join in the festivities.

We then walked onto Jalan Bendahara again headed north before turning right onto Lorong Haji Bachee and back to The Apple Residences.

Stay tuned as we go on an epic walkabout tomorrow!
